How this is calculated
For trees, Colorado State University Extension's widely used rule of thumb is one year of establishment time per inch of trunk caliper, measured about six inches above the soil line, with up to 1.5 years per inch for larger or more stressed transplants. A 2-inch caliper tree, a common size for a residential planting, takes roughly 2 to 3 years to fully establish a root system in its new location.
Shrubs don't have a standard caliper measurement the way trees do, so this calculator uses planting size instead. University of Kentucky Plant Pathology Extension puts general woody ornamental establishment at 3 to 5 years, and this tool scales within that range based on size at planting: smaller shrubs toward the 3-year end, larger ones toward 5. That size scaling is our own reasonable interpolation within UK's published range, not a separate published figure, since the source gives a general range rather than a size-specific breakdown.
"Established" specifically means the root system has expanded into the surrounding native soil and grown enough feeder roots to support the plant without extra help, not just that it's alive and leafing out. Visible leaf and shoot growth in year one is not the same thing, and both sources warn against reading it as a sign the plant is already settled in.

Do I need to water this whole window, not just the first year?
Yes, and this is the most common mistake with new transplants. Watering schedules that taper off after one growing season leave the plant without support for years two through four (or more), right when it's still building out its root system. Deep, infrequent watering through the full estimated window matters more than a heavy first-year schedule alone.
How do I measure trunk caliper correctly?
Measure the trunk diameter about 6 inches above the soil line for trees up to 4 inches caliper, or 12 inches above the soil line for larger trees, per standard nursery stock measurement convention. Measuring higher up the trunk, where it's naturally narrower, will underestimate the caliper and understate the real establishment time.
Why does a bigger tree take longer to establish, not less time overall?
A larger transplant loses a bigger share of its root system relative to its canopy during digging, since nursery trees are field-grown with roots pruned to a manageable root ball. A smaller, younger tree that was container-grown or more recently transplanted keeps more of its original root mass intact, so it has less ground to make up.
My tree still looks stressed well past the estimated window, what now?
Check for underlying issues first: girdling roots, planting depth (the root flare should be visible at the soil surface, not buried), and soil drainage are common causes of prolonged stress that go beyond normal transplant shock. If the basics check out, some individual plants and species genuinely do run past the estimated window depending on site conditions.
