Fruit trees like apple, peach, and cherry need a minimum number of cold hours over winter to break dormancy properly and bloom on schedule the following spring. How this is calculated

A chill hour is any hour spent between 32°F and 45°F, per Mississippi State Extension. Real chill-hour stations measure this hour by hour, but most people only know their area's average daily high and low, not an hourly log.

This calculator estimates the split with a sinusoidal approximation: it treats your day's temperature as swinging smoothly between your low and your high, then works out how much of that swing falls inside the 32-45°F band. That daily estimate gets multiplied by the number of days in your dormant season for a season total. This is a simplified version of the daily max/min-based estimation approach described by Linvill, not the full model, since it only needs two numbers instead of a temperature dataset.

What counts as a chill hour exactly?

Per Mississippi State Extension's chilling model, any hour where the air temperature sits between 32°F and 45°F counts. Hours below 32°F or above 45°F don't contribute, and some models even subtract chill for hours that get too warm during a winter warm spell, though this calculator uses the simpler accumulation-only version.

How do I find my area's typical winter high and low?

NOAA's climate normals, available through the National Centers for Environmental Information, give 30-year average daily highs and lows by location and month, which is a solid input source. Your own weather station data or a nearby airport's historical averages work too, as long as they cover your actual dormant season months.

Why is chill hours different from chill portions or chill units?

They're different accounting systems for the same underlying idea. Chill hours is the original, simplest model and the one most nursery tags and older extension guides still use, so this calculator matches that. Chill portions (the Dynamic Model) accounts for heat canceling out some accumulated chill and is considered more accurate in mild-winter climates, but it needs a full temperature dataset to calculate, not just a daily high and low.

What happens if a tree doesn't get enough chill hours?

Bloom becomes delayed, spread out over a longer window, and less uniform, and in severe shortfalls buds can fail to open at all. This is a common problem for high-chill varieties planted in warming or naturally mild climates, which is exactly the mismatch this calculator is meant to help you catch before you plant.
